Sophie B眉cker is our first recipient. She is graduating from HS today and cannot be here. She has been accepted at UCLA and UC Berkeley for applied mathematics. She is still waiting to hear from TU Munich, one of the best technical universities in Germany. Sophie joined us as a young and very reserved student. During the Covid pandemic, we administered the DSDI examination in my garden. The representative from the German government, who was not allowed to travel, joined us through zoom from Bremen. Sophie was forced to speak up to make sure the computer picked up her voice. It was difficult for her but she passed the DSDI examination. Her topic was Stella Goldschlag – a Jewish spy for the Nazis. And two years later, she passed the DSDII with flying colors. She researched Bedrohte Dialekte in Deutschland, threatened dialects. Every year at our school, she became a bit more self-assured. And look at her now: A confident young woman with a great future ahead of her! Sophie, thank you for staying on as a classroom aide for the past two years. We wish you the best and we hope that Munich will finally grab you!

Morgan Moelleken O鈥橞rien is our second recipient. She has been accepted at UCLA and Georgetown University, as well as wait-listed at Harvard to study German language and literature. She was headed into the medical field before she entered the German School and her interest turned towards German literature. Passing both the DSDI and DSDII with great results, Morgan began to take University literature classes during her junior and senior years at HS, one even on Kafka. For the DSDII, she did research on the Mennonites, their history and how this group is doing in Germany. Morgan, we thank you for staying on as a classroom aide during your senior year. We are so proud of you and wish you the very best of luck at UCLA. Go German Department!

Darel Katcher lives in Cincinatti now and cannot attend today鈥檚 event. He learned German after he had a choice between German and Chinese and decided to join the German School. His family moved shortly before the Pandemic and he continued via zoom. When in person classes resumed, Darrel dialed in from Ohio. Angela, his teacher, set up a zoom meeting every Saturday for Darel to participate. When it came to testing, though, he had to fly in. On these days, we would see Darel coming up the stairs at school with his suitcase, straight from the airport. His motivation to learn German and his dedication to our school are exemplary. His knowledge was always advanced for his age. For the DSDI, his topic was Schroedinger鈥檚 Cat, which deals with a thought experiment involving quantum physics. For the DSDII, his topic was Werner von Braun. He wants to study aerospace engineering and he might end up in Germany for research opportunities.
